Scam detection for suspicious chats on Messenger

It’s our priority to keep you safe while using Messenger. Scam detection can help protect you from common scams in your Messenger chats.
How scam detection works
When this feature is turned on, Meta uses technology on your device to inform you if a recently created chat with a new connection may contain signs of a scam. Because detection happens on your device, chats with end-to-end encryption stay secure.
How to use scam detection
If you’re notified that a chat may contain signs of a scam, we’ll ask if you’d like to send recent messages you received to AI review. Messages that are shared with AI are no longer end-to-end encrypted.
When the review is complete, if a potential scam has been detected, you’ll see information about why the messages may be indicative of a scam and suggested actions to take (like blocking or reporting the other user in the chat). If you think a chat goes against our Community Standards, please report it.
You can turn scam detection off at any time in settings.
To turn off scam detection:
  1. Go to your Privacy & safety settings.
  2. Tap Scam detection.
  3. Tap the toggle next to Scam detection to turn the setting off.
  4. Tap Turn off to confirm.
