Change the theme or color of a Messenger chat

You can pick different themes, colors and gradients for your chats on Messenger. When you choose a theme or color for a chat, the chat will be set to that theme or color across Messenger, messenger.com, the Messenger desktop app and messages on Facebook.
Note: In community chats, only admins are able to customize themes and emojis.

Change the theme of your Messenger chat

Desktop App:
  1. Open the conversation you want to pick a theme for.
  2. Click then click Theme.
  3. Select a new theme for the conversation.
  4. Click Set Theme.
Desktop (messenger):
  1. From Chats, open the conversation you want to pick a theme for.
  2. Click , then click Customize chat on the right.
  3. Click Change theme, then select a new theme for the conversation.
  4. Click Select.
Keep in mind that some themes include word effects, which are animations everyone sees in the chat when you use certain words or phrases. If you do not want certain word effects to appear, you can learn how to remove any word effect.
