Import Facebook contacts to your Messenger without Facebook account

If you create a Messenger without Facebook account, your Facebook contacts won’t be automatically transferred to your new account, but you can choose to import your contacts from Facebook with a one-time import. To do this, you’ll need to log into your Facebook account when prompted, then follow the on-screen instructions.
Note: Your choice to separate your Facebook and Messenger without Facebook experiences will not be affected by the one-time import.
Imported Facebook contacts include all your Facebook friends and the people with whom you most recently communicated in a 1:1 Facebook message. When you import your Facebook contacts, you will be able to find and message them more easily from your Messenger without Facebook account. If you haven’t already started chatting with people from your Messenger without Facebook account, you’ll see a list of up to 20 of the people that you most recently chatted with on Facebook under “Imported contacts.” To start a conversation, tap Chat next to one of their names.

Import your Facebook contacts from settings

If you accidentally dismissed the prompt, you can still initiate the one-time import of your Facebook contacts to your Messenger without Facebook account from Settings.
  1. Open your Messenger app.
  2. From Chats, tap Menu in the bottom right.
  3. Tap Settings Settings.
  4. Tap Import contacts.

Keep in mind

  • People you’ve blocked and restricted from your Facebook account will also be blocked in your Messenger without Facebook account.
  • Contact importing does not include phone contacts that you’ve uploaded from Facebook that are not Facebook friends or messaging connections. Learn more about how to upload your mobile contacts.
  • Imported contacts do not include Marketplace, or Business messaging contacts.
  • Your chat history will not be imported, but your existing chats will still be available in Facebook.
  • The first message you send to an imported contact will be delivered directly to their inbox, not their Message requests folder. To continue chatting, the recipient has to accept the message.
