How active status works on Messenger and Facebook

Active status shows when you're active, currently in the same chat or were recently active on Facebook or Messenger on this profile. Your active status shows to people you’re connected to on Facebook and Messenger, and to people you’ve sent friend requests to.
Learn how to turn your active status on or off. You can also block someone to stop sharing your active status with them.
When your active status is on
- Your connections and people you’ve sent friend requests to across Facebook and Messenger who also have their active status on will see
Active dot or a timestamp next to your profile picture that shows when you were last active on the profiles you have active status turned on for. They'll also be able to see if you're currently in the same chat as them on this profile.
When your active status is off
- You won't see other people’s active status.
- If you turn off active status for one app, you may still appear active on a different app that doesn’t have it off. For example, if you turn off active status for your Facebook app but not for your Messenger app, people may still be able to see your status on Messenger. If you don’t want to show your active status, turn it off wherever you’re using Messenger or Facebook.
Troubleshoot active status
There may be a delay between when someone becomes active or recently active and when they're shown as active or recently active. If you are still having issues with active status, you can try these tips to troubleshoot your Messenger app:
- Close then reopen your Messenger app.
- Update your Messenger app.
- Check your Internet connection.
If you cannot see someone else’s active status, it may be because:
- That profile has turned off their active status.
- That profile has blocked you.
What a green dot means for Facebook Pages
Facebook Pages that have been online recently, or have a record of being quick and responsive in their replies to messages on Facebook, Messenger, or WhatsApp will have
Active dot.
This is different from
Active dot you see for a person’s active status, which is why you may see
Active dot on a Facebook Page even when your own active status is off.
