What happens when secure storage is off
This feature is gradually being introduced and may not be available to you yet.
When secure storage is off:
- You won’t be able to restore your end-to-end encrypted chat history if you replace your device.
- Your end-to-end encrypted messages will not be stored remotely, they will only be saved on your device.
- Low storage mode will be on by default. This means that when your mobile phone or tablet reaches 1GB of remaining storage capacity, any end-to-end encrypted messages older than 90 days will be deleted from Messenger (including messages accessed through Facebook). You can turn this off at any time in your Settings.
If you choose to delete secure storage:
- Any messages saved in secure storage will be permanently deleted.
- Messages saved on your device won’t be affected. Keep in mind that your entire message history may not be available on your device.
- New end-to-end encrypted messages will only be stored on your device, not in secure storage.
Note: All conditions that apply when secure storage is turned off also apply when you delete secure storage.
If you decide to turn on secure storage later, all future end-to-end encrypted messages will be saved to secure storage.
