Privacy and safety in communities on Messenger

Creating a new community on Messenger is not available to everyone or on all platforms at this time.
You can create a chat-based community on Messenger to connect with people with shared interests. These communities are managed by community admins, and can be found and joined by anyone on Messenger. They are not Facebook groups and do not include the same features as Facebook groups.
Since communities on Messenger are designed for more public conversations, they do not follow the same privacy guidelines as your personal messages on Messenger.
For example, remember that:
- All current and future members of your community can see chat content and that Meta reviews content against our Community Standards.
- Only members can participate in your community, but anyone can preview content, including the community’s name and description, chat names, names of mutual friends in a chat, the admin’s name and profile picture and more.
The table below outlines what admins and members can do in communities created on Messenger:
| Community admins | Community members | |
|---|---|---|
Invite new members to join a community | ✔ | ✔ |
Remove someone from a community | ✔ | |
Approve member requests to a community | ✔ | Depends on settings set by admin |
Delete community with no members | ✔ | |
Leave a community | ✔ | ✔ |
If this feature is available to you, you will see the option to create a new community in the
Menu of your Messenger mobile app.
