Can I log out of Messenger?

You can't log out of an account on Messenger, but here are some things you can do to reduce notifications, make yourself unavailable or stop getting messages from certain people:
Turn off or adjust notification setting

You can turn notifications off for all conversations or for just a single conversation. You can also turn off the ability to preview messages in your notifications.
Desktop App:
To turn Messenger notifications on or off:
  1. Click your photo in the top left.
  2. Click Preferences.
  3. Click Notifications.
  4. Click below Do not disturb or click Show previews.
To turn off notification previews:
  1. Click your photo in the top left.
  2. Click Preferences.
  3. Click Notifications.
  4. Click below Show previews to turn on and off.
  5. To turn off notifications for a single conversation:
  1. Open the conversation.
  2. Clickin the top right.
  3. Select Mute Notifications.
  4. Choose how long you want to mute notifications for, then click Confirm.

Desktop (messenger.com):
To turn Messenger notifications on or off:
  1. Next to Chats, click .
  2. Click Settings.
  3. Check Desktop notifications enabled, then click Done.
To turn off notifications for a single conversation:
  1. Below Chats hover over the conversation.
  2. Click then click Mute.
  3. Choose how long you want to mute notifications for, then click Mute.

Block someone

When you block messages and calls from someone’s Facebook or Instagram account, they'll no longer be able to contact you (example: send you messages, call you) on Messenger or Facebook chat. You can also ignore a conversation, turn off notifications for a conversation, or delete a conversation.
How do I block messages and calls from someone on Messenger?
To block messages from someone:
Desktop App:
  1. Open a conversation with the person you want to block and click .
  2. Click Block on Messenger > Block.
Desktop (messenger.com):
  1. Below Chats, hover over a conversation with the person you want to block and click .
  2. Click Block Messages > Block Messages.
Note: Blocking messages from someone is different from blocking them on Facebook. If you block messages from someone, but you don't block them on Facebook, you'll still be able to see their Facebook profile. Depending on their privacy settings, you may also be able to see things like their status updates, comments, likes and tags on Facebook. Learn how to block people on Facebook.
Keep in mind that you can also delete a message or conversation directly from Messenger.
What happens when I block messages and calls from someone while I’m using Messenger?
When you block messages and calls from someone’s Facebook or Instagram account, they'll no longer be able to:
  • Chat with you on Messenger or Facebook Chat. You won’t receive messages or calls from the account you’ve blocked.
  • Receive messages or calls from your Messenger or Facebook account to their account.
  • Join a room you’re in if both you and they are logged into Facebook or Messenger.
Keep in mind that if you block messages and calls from someone’s Facebook account, they can still:
  • See your profile on Facebook.
  • Leave comments on your posts or post on your profile.
  • See your messages if you're both in the same group conversation. If you and the person you block are in a group conversation together, you'll be notified before you enter the conversation. You can leave the group at any time.
  • Communicate with you if they’re logged out of their account and join a room that you’re in. Remember that you can leave a room at any time.
  • Send you messages from a different Facebook or Instagram account if they have more than one.

Appear as inactive

You can show when you're active or recently active by turning on your Active Status. When you turn Active Status off, you'll still appear active or recently active from any other places where you're using Facebook or Messenger unless you turn off Active Status in those places, too.
To turn your active Status on or off in Messenger:
Desktop App
  1. Open Messenger for Windows or macOS.
  2. Click your photo in the top left.
  3. Click Preferences.
  4. Click Active Status.
  5. Click below Show Active Status to turn your Active Status on or off.
Desktop (messenger.com)
  1. Open Messenger for Windows or macOS.
  2. Click in the top left.
  3. Click Settings.
  4. Click next to Show when you're active to turn your Active Status on or off.

Switch accounts
Control your privacy

You can control your privacy in Messenger by making certain information private or public to specific people. You can find these privacy settings on the Privacy tab of your Messenger account.
To get to the Privacy tab in Messenger:
  1. Open your Messenger app.
  2. From Chats, tap your profile picture in the top left.
  3. From the menu, tap Privacy.
Under the Privacy tab in Messenger, you can control privacy settings for:
  • Messaging Settings. You can use these settings to control who can reach your inbox.
  • Secret Conversations. Secret conversations in Messenger are end-to-end encrypted and are only read by you and the other person. Learn how to use secret conversations in Messenger.
