End-to-end encrypted messages are now automatically stored remotely in your backup. This feature is gradually being introduced and may not be available to you yet.
End-to-end encrypted messages are automatically stored remotely in your backup, so you can get your full message history whenever you log into Messenger from a new device using the security method you chose.
Add or update your security method
- On a computer, open Messenger.com and click your profile photo in the bottom left.
- Click Privacy & safety, then click End-to-end encrypted chats.
- Click Message storage.
- Choose a security method. If you choose to use a Google Account on Android mobile devices or an Apple account on iOS mobile devices, you will be able to log in without a PIN. Otherwise, you can select a PIN or 40-character code, or you can choose to store your backup on your device only.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. If you created a PIN or generated a 40-character code, remember to keep it somewhere safe. You’ll need it to restore your chats when you switch devices.
You can download a copy of your end-to-end encrypted chat history at any time.
