It's important to keep your Messenger app up to date. Installing the latest version may help to fix problems when something's not working.
Download Messenger for Mac computers
You can click here to download Messenger directly or you can download Messenger from the App Store. After installing from the App Store, make sure to turn on automatic updates in the App Store to always have the newest version of the Messenger app.
The new app for Mac is built with Apple Catalyst technology, which means there will be some minor differences from the previous app:
- Calls no longer include Screen Sharing, Whiteboard and Miniview capabilities.
- Minimum macOS supported version is changing to 12.1.
- Ability to select a language different from the operating system language was removed from settings. Messenger will match system language (if supported).
Download Messenger for Windows computers
Go to the Microsoft Store to download Messenger for Windows. After installing, make sure to turn on automatic updates in the Microsoft Store to always have the newest version of the Messenger app.
Make sure you also turn on secure storage before updating so that your end-to-end encrypted chat history is stored. Learn more about how to turn on secure storage for end-to-end encryption.
The new app for Windows is built with web platform technology, which means there will be some minor differences from the previous app:
- Audio calls will no longer include Dolby ambient noise cancellation.
- Background blur in calls will no longer be available.
- Facebook login is no longer supported. You need to enter your email address and password to log in.
- Mic and camera switching can only be done in the settings outside of a call.
Note: The new Messenger app can only be downloaded from the Microsoft Store.

- Confirm that the app is available for your device.
