Why you should update your Messenger-Only account

You’ll need to update your account in the Messenger app for Android and iPhone. Once your account is updated, you can continue to use Messenger in the app and on your computer.
If you use a Messenger-only account, you need to update your existing Messenger account to a Deactivated Except Messenger Account (DEMA). DEMA is a type of account that allows you to use Messenger without having an active Facebook account.
When you have a DEMA:
  • You can still chat with friends on Messenger.
  • Your picture will only be visible in your conversations on Messenger.
  • Other people can search for you in Messenger and send you a message.
  • You won’t be searchable on Facebook.
  • You’ll have a deactivated Facebook profile that you can activate at any time.
  • You’ll need to confirm your birthday and may be asked to create a password for account security.
Note: When you update your Messenger-Only account to Deactivated Except Messenger Account (DEMA), you'll have a deactivated Facebook account that you can choose to activate at any time.
If you don't want to update to a DEMA, you can download your chat history and contacts list with Download your information in Account settings. Remember that if you don't update your Messenger account within 90 days, you'll no longer have access to Messenger.
You can still download your information or update to a DEMA for an additional 60 days after we’ve stopped asking you to update your Messenger Only account. If you still haven't updated to a DEMA after 60 days, your Messenger account will be deleted.
