Automated and AI chats with Pages on Messenger

Pages can message you using Meta APIs on our Developer Platform to create automated chats on Messenger. At this time, a small number of Pages can also use AI from Meta to generate responses on Messenger.
Where legally required, you must be notified within the message thread when you are interacting with an automated chat. This includes:
  • At the beginning of the conversation
  • After a significant lapse of time
  • When the conversation is passed from a human back to an automated chat
Pages can also remind you when messages are automated or generated by AI, even when it isn't legally required.

About business chats with AI

To provide you with faster service, some Pages may use AI to generate responses in chats on Messenger. These messages are labeled with Facebook created this chat.
Message threads from you to a Page may be automatically created if AI determines your comment on a Page’s post signals a need for business response (for example: “how much does this cost?” or “when will this product be available?”). These threads are visible only to the Page until they send a response. You will not see any changes to your inbox until they reply, and if they do, you will see your original comment in the message thread as well as the Page’s reply.
AI responses are based on business information, but some may not be accurate or appropriate. Conversations with business AIs are shared with you, the business and Meta. We may use your feedback, chat history and messages sent to businesses to improve AI quality.

Stop receiving messages generated by AI

To stop receiving messages generated by AI from Meta in a specific chat with a business, you can ask by sending something like “chat with a representative” or “stop messages from AI” in the chat. While this will stop the AI from responding in the current conversation, it’s possible that you could receive AI-generated messages from the same business or other businesses in the future.
