Unsend for you and Unsend for everyone are now called Delete for you and Delete for everyone. You may still see Remove or Unsend in some places, such as community chats, while we are introducing these name changes.
Deleting messages, chats or photos permanently removes them, and you won't be able to see them anymore. If you want to hide a chat from your Chats list but not delete it, you can archive the chat instead.
When deleting a message you sent, you have the option to Delete for you or Delete for everyone. When deleting a message you received, you only have the option to Delete for you.
If you select Delete for you, other people in the chat will still see the messages in their chat screen. If you select Delete for everyone, other people in the chat will no longer be able to see the deleted message.
You can also learn how to edit a message.

Delete a message you sent

Desktop (messenger.com):
  1. Open the chat containing a message you'd like to delete.
  2. Hover over the message you'd like to delete and click , then click Delete.
  3. Click Delete for you or Delete for everyone.

Delete a message you received

Desktop (messenger.com):
  1. Open the chat containing a message you'd like to delete.
  2. Hover over the message you'd like to delete and click , then Delete.
  3. Click Delete for you.

Note:

  • People may have already seen your message before you deleted it.
  • If you or someone in your chat downloads a copy of their Facebook data, you’ll both be able to see that messages were deleted in the chat, but not what those messages said. Select Messages to include chat history when downloading your information.
  • If you think a deleted message you've received goes against our Community Standards, you can report it by tapping and holding on a message next to it. You can also report the conversation. Any deleted messages from a reported conversation may be reviewed as part of the report. We can only review the content of deleted messages if you report them within 14 days after they’re deleted, or within 6 hours in end-to-end encrypted chats.
  • If you delete forwarded content sent in a chat (example: a Facebook post), only the forwarded message in the chat is deleted, but not the original content itself.

Deleting community chats or channels

Learn how to delete community chats or channels. Admins and moderators of a community chat or channel that you’re in can permanently delete any content sent in the conversation. If something is deleted from a community chat or channel, you won't be able to see or access that content again.
